2024 General Election Recommendations

Image
Hello! Here are my 2024 General Election recommendations.  I greatly appreciated the commentary and research from Girl, I Guess . I relied heavily on Injustice Watch for their guide on judges (truly an incredible resource!).  The short version here, with a lot more explanation below, is that I am supporting Ebony Deberry (District 2) and Karen Zaccor (District 4) for Chicago's first elected school board. (I live in District 2, but wanted to give Karen a shout out as District 4 covers the northside as well.) Please note, if you're voting by mail, this is on the back of the first page of your ballot.  Otherwise, I voted Democratic straight down the ballot, with the exception of one race and judges for retention. If you want to learn more about elected school board, check out these resources: To identify your district, go to:  https://projects.chalkbeat.org/2024/interactive-map-chicago-school-board-districts/  OR  https://map-chicago.pages.dev/ If you’re not ...

2024 Democratic Primary Recommendations

Image
Hello!! It's election season again!  And there are some critical questions on the primary ballot.  I'll put all my other recommendations at the bottom, as well as resources if you need to register to vote, want to see your own sample ballot, etc.  Also, if you can sacrifice a few precious hours of your time on election day (March 19), we need everyone who wants the city to do something to address homelessness to volunteer for a shift, the first and especially last shifts of the day are most important.  You can sign up here.   Can't join us on Tuesday?  Help us reach voters this weekend . Many people still don't know about the Bring Chicago Home campaign.  Vote YES on The Bring Chicago Home (aka Ballot Question 1) ballot referendum to amend the Real Estate Transfer Tax This is our opportunity to change a  one-time tax, that already exists , to make it more fair AND generate over $100 million in funding every year dedicated to combatting homelessnes...

February 2023 Chicago Municipal Elections Guide

Image
For the first time ever, in all the contested races on my ballot, I was able to vote for friends, colleagues, or fellow comrades -- either people I know personally or with whom I have one degree of separation. To have so many great candidates on the ballot gives me HOPE for the city I'm raising my children in. I hope you'll join me in electing progressives and up and down the ballot.  Here is my voter guide. If I don't cover your ward or police district, please let me know and I'll be happy to weigh in. :) But first:  Find your ward and police district .  Mayor: BRANDON JOHNSON!!!  Brandon comes from the progressive movement in Chicago. He worked as a teacher in CPS, was an organizer with CTU, now serves as a Cook County Commissioner. He lives in Austin with his wife and children. He knows intimately the struggles so many Chicagoans are facing. I want our next mayor to share my values and vision for this being a city where everyone can thrive, not just a place where ...

Birth Story Number Two

Image
This is the story of an unmedicated, vaginal delivery, which capped off a planned and wanted pregnancy. I feel so grateful and fortunate to be telling this tale. I know many friends who have struggled/are struggling to get pregnant, are searching for a partner for the parenting journey, and who have had the heartbreaking experience of losing fetuses through miscarriages and babies during labor. I know my story won’t be for everyone to read. I want to share it because I love talking about pregnancy and labor and want to share my experience of unmedicated labor as it continues to constitute only about ~27% of births in this country. I feel immensely privileged to have had bodily autonomy in planning this pregnancy, that my partner and I were able to conceive, and that I was able to gestate and deliver a healthy baby. I know none of these are to be taken for granted.  My doula shared a belief that labor and birth teach you what you need to know to be the parent you need to be for you...
